Time machines already exist.
If you’ve tried TikTok you would know… The app sucks you in and within seconds you’re transported 30+ minutes into the future. The very first time I tried it, I couldn’t put it down for 30 minutes.
Getting users to use the app for so long the very first time they open it also has a special side effect. It creates a lot of opportunity for users to quickly establish a new habit of checking TikTok for their dopamine desires.
No login prompt. Just one question and a very short interactive tutorial. This lowers friction and drastically shortens the time it takes users to get value out of the app. It essentially guarantees a user will get value before their curiosity runs out.
Of course it also helps that TikTok’s algorithm is so good that it can match you with interesting videos within just a few swipes.

Ask yourself, what do you really need in order to get your users to the value point? What can you strip out of the existing onboarding flow? Can you provide some of the value upfront before the lengthier onboarding process?
Try to get your users to an initial feeling of value in 3 taps or less.
When onboarding, less is more.
