How Threads Spun Out A Successful Launch

Strategy

:

Enhanced FOMO

🚀 Success:

Fastest product ever to grow to 100M users - only took 5 days (2023)

🌱 Metrics Improved:

Sign Ups, Activation Rate, Viral Coefficient

Threads got 50 million users in 24 hours.

Yes, Threads had 500M daily active Instagram users to lean on to help with their launch.

But they didn’t really use them.

The formula

When it works best

How it looks in the real-world

Enhanced FOMO

Instagram did send a little notification to their user base.

But here’s the thing - only approximately half of mobile users subscribe to push notifications. Then only 3.4% of notifications actually get clicked.

So assuming 100% of the users who clicked the notification downloaded Threads, they still would have only got a ‘measly’ 8.5M users.

To kickstart a social media of this scale this just isn’t good enough. And Instagram knew it.

So they focused on building viral hype and incentivising users to signup asap.

First, each user was numbered based on how quickly they registered for the platform.

Second, each Instagram user's followers only automatically get added to their Threads account if they register before their followers.

So no-one wanted to be late to the party. And as a result most users got to Threads through word of mouth or some form of media.

Why it works

What it means for you

Need your users to do something really important? Fear is the strongest motivator. You can get users to take key actions by capturing exactly what users fear missing out on.

But beware and use it sparsely. Fear is only good as a short term motivator and when overused it will make your users annoyed and disgruntled with your product.

Risky but so far it seems like it has paid off.
